La la la LEATHER

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

There's no excuse for not owning a fabulous leather jacket.  I found mine last year, during one of the hottest, stickiest NYC summers ever.  Now I had been on the hunt for a leather jacket for years.  It's one of those pieces that accentuates every outfit in your wardrobe.  One unbearably humid day, I waltzed into a boutique on the upper west side, and lo and behold--I fell in love.  And because I walked into my own personal leather heaven in the middle of summer, I nabbed my jacket for 50% off!  For staple pieces that you will own for a lifetime, like a leather jacket, the best time to shop is during the off season for deals and steals you just can't walk away from.

While it took me years to find my perfect jacket, I thought I would at least give you a couple of ideas to get you on the right track, like this motorcycle jacket by Kinder Aggugini for Impulse at Macy's (it's a limited collaboration, so jump on this if you love it!)

My own leather jacket is a black bomber; and I like to wear it a few ways.  Since moving to LA I've been vamping up my "badass" look with studded jewelry and accessories--and my bomber is the perfect finishing touch when I want to look like I mean business.  If you want to soften the look--I throw on a flirty floral (see my last blog post!) dress or pair with a more feminine look--whether it be in color or fabric.

I love the look of this particular jacket--it's got some great detailing.  Like the asymmetrical zip, snap front neckline, and stitching at the shoulder.

There are a bunch of great options out there like herehere, and here.

And if you want the look for less, or don't wear leather--check out this great LC for Lauren Conrad cropped faux-leather motorcycle jacket at Kohl's (and it's on sale!).  The light tan color and feminine rouching on the side make it a great look for spring!

Spring Forward!

It's here.  What every girl waits for all season long (or at least I do).  SPRING!

Okay, maybe those of you on the east coast are still experiencing all that snow, but for us on the left coast we're enjoying the sunshine and warm weather all year round.  Which means we can start vamping up our wardrobe with one of this Spring's most popular runway trends: flirty florals.

Bright bold floral patterns look great on everyone and are one of this season's hottest trends.  I've scoured the web to find my favorite florals like this Ann Taylor Loft Dress above.  This all over orange floral print is a bold statement in itself, and needs little to accessorize the look.  Remember when dress shopping to keep it to one bold element in the design of the dress.  In this case, it's the print that does the talking, and all other details in the structure of this dress are tasteful and subtle, ie. the knee length hem, thick tank straps, and modest neckline.  Always go for just one "look at me" aspect when putting together an outfit; if you're wearing a short mini to accentuate a great pair of stems, be sure to cover up on top and save the decolletage for another day.

This season we'll be seeing some great floral patterns in a variety of different styles.  Check out a few of my favorites so far like here, here, here, and here.

If you're rocking a statement all over pattern, be sure to break up bright floral dresses with a woven or leather belt around your waist (especially if you're petite!).  Pair with a long cardigan in a neutral hue to add a subtle accessory.

Finish the look with a pair of nude heeled sandals like these or these which give the appearance of longer legs.  Or if you're not the heel wearing type try a pair of embellished gladiators like these ones from American Eagle.  And If you're still feeling that crisp weather back east, pair with a great versatile suede or leather boot to keep those tootsies warm until you can show off your fab new pedi!

Bilson Goes Home

Friday, February 18, 2011

It's no secret that I was a huge out-of-the-closet O.C. fan, mainly due in part to Rachel Bilson.  The actress segued into movies and had a stint in InStyle magazine giving fashion tips to readers.  Now she's onto the next: designing a whimsically vintage inspired porcelain dinnerware collection, "Edie Rose Home" available at Macy's.

Check out some of her pieces below:

Lands' End.

Okay, so I would typically associate this brand with unfashionable mothers and high-waisted stretchy corduroys.

Enter Lands' End Canvas:  A line built on redesigning classic pieces with "authentic inspiration [and] modern interpretation".  If there's one way to justify a shopping spree, it's by purchasing staple pieces that are well made and reasonably priced, like this chambray officer shirt.  The distinctive combination weave of one white weft yarn and a colored warp yarn create a denim-like appearance that go great with a pair of khakis or white skinny jeans.  Paired with a punch of color like these yellow sandals and you've got a put together, fun look.

Canvas is also home to a great collection of accessories like herehere, and here.  Be sure to check out their sale section too for great deals!

If there's one thing I love more than J.Crew, it's Madewell.

For those of you blissfully unaware people out there, J.Crew is to Madewell as Gap is to Banana Republic and Old Navy.  How to describe my favorite store...well you know how you and your mother could find something uber cute at J.Crew?  Well only you could find something at Madewell.  It's a younger style that encompasses that unique NY look that I love so much.  Among awesome denim pieces, Madewell is home to my favorite selection of fun, flirty scarves.  Check 'em out:

With a number of fantastic collaborations, Madewell continuously houses those incredible one-of-a-kind pieces that will have everyone asking you "Where did you get that?"
